Oando sponsors UN Global Compact anti-corruption workshop in Nigeria

In line with its strict adherence to the principles of ethical business practice in all its businesses, Oando PLC has shown commitment to the United Nations’ Global Compact (UNGC) initiative by joining other corporate organisations in gold sponsoring the body’s regional workshop in Nigeria.

The workshop, which is the first in Africa, has the theme, ‘fighting corruption through collective action: practical strategies for companies’, scheduled for 16th-19th March, 2009 at the Sheraton Hotels and Towers, Lagos.

The Global Compact Office, New York, mandated the Global Compact Local Network (Nigeria) to organise the Global Compact Regional Meeting for African region. This initiative is also supported by the UN’s Office on Drug and Crime as well as the World Bank Institute.

The Nigerian Network is championed by three different bodies, comprising the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG), which also serves as the Network Secretariat, the Nigeria Institute of International Affairs (NIIA) and the Africa Leadership Forum (ALF).

The United Nations’ Global Contact Initiative intends to focus on how companies can utilize collective action to oppose corruption in the context of business operations in Africa.

Commenting, Mrs. Deji Delano, Chief Compliance Officer & Company Secretary said, “We are very proud to be part of a global initiative that promotes what Oando is very passionate about – Conducting business in the most ethical and transparent manner. In demonstration of this commitment to principled business conduct Oando had earlier become a Signatory of the World Economic Forum’s (WEF) ‘Partnering Against Corruption Initiative’ (PACI) in 2008”.

Commenting further, Mrs. Delano said, “We believe that adhering to corporate governance principles will have a positive impact on business activities in Nigeria and around the world. We therefore urge other corporate organizations to be part of this laudable and timely event”.
