GAS GUIDE

Introduction to Natural Gas

Energy remains a major part of an organisation’s value creation process, where most companies spend between 15 – 35% of their turnover.

Gas is today the most efficient energy source and therefore the future therefore will play a vital role in the future of providing energy solutions to businesses and other organisations.

It is possible to achieve between 24 – 43% of cost savings by utilizing alternative energy sources.

In Nigeria, a company could save up to N180m in a N2bn turnover company; yours can be in multiples.

Gas offers a cheaper, cleaner and safer alternative to other non renewable energy sources.

Nigeria is rich in Natural Gas, it ranks among the world’s top 10 countries in terms of Natural Gas reserves estimated at 189Tcf (about twice it crude oil reserve).

Natural gas is a naturally occurring fuel that is gaining popularity in meeting our increasing energy demand because of its unique qualities, in terms of Safety, Reliability, Competitive Pricing and Environmental Friendliness.

Properties and Benefits of Natural Gas

Non-toxic

Natural gas contains no toxic ingredients. It is relatively harmless, even when inhaled.

Lighter Than Air

If natural gas escapes into the atmosphere, it dissipates rapidly. A heavier-than-air gas such as propane or gasoline fumes, would settle and accumulate near the ground.

Colourless

When mixed with the proper amount of air and ignited, invisible natural gas burns with a clean, blue flame “Blue Angel”. It is one of the cleanest burning fuels, producing primarily heat, carbon dioxide and water vapour.

Odourless

When taken from the ground, natural gas is odourless. A harmless but pungent odour is added as a safety precaution. The odourant is so effective you can smell even the smallest quantity of gas in the event of a leak.

Narrow Flamability Range

To help ensure predictable, safe use, Natural gas will only ignite when there is an air-and-gas mixture of between 5 and 15 percent ratio. Any mixture outside the range will not combust.

Cleaner

It is the cleanest-burning fossil fuel available. It helps improve air and water quality especially when used in place of more polluting energy sources. When natural gas burns, virtually no harmful pollutants are produced.

Utilization Option

As a fuel, natural gas is convenient and efficient.

It is used primarily for heat, in industrial, commercial and residential setting applications

Natural gas can be used to generate electricity

Gas is often used to heat industrial and commercial boilers and pressure vessels

Natural gas can be used to produce carbon dioxide in a cheaper and more efficient way

Natural gas can be used as a fuel for vehicular application (Compressed Natural Gas)

Composition and Quality

Natural gas is predominantly 82 – 94% Methane, 3 – 6% Ethane, 0.1 – 2% Propane, while other compounds like Butane, Pentane, Hexane, Carbon dioxide, Nitrogen account for the remaining percentage.

Reactive hydrocarbons are reduced by up to 80%

Nitrogen oxides are reduced by up to 50%

Carbon monoxide is reduced by up to 50%

Black smoke is virtually eliminated or non-existent

Reduction in the emission of particulates in the atmosphere

Decrease chance of oil/diesel spills
