SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITYCSR ProjectsOur core activities are centered on making a positive impact in the lives of people that reside in communities where we operate. The projects include: Adopt A School ProgrammeThe Adopt – A- School programme was initiated in April, 2007 and is an avenue for Oando PLC to support the growth of education in communities where we operate. We plan on adopting eight Primary schools in Nigeria by 2008. We will contribute towards the development of the schools for the duration of the “adoption” through the renovation of facilities, provision of teaching aids, books, etc. The initiative is being implemented in partnership with the Ministry of Education, State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), related institutions and NGOs. Adoption Ceremony of Government Primary School, On the 28th of June, 2007 we adopted our first school, Government Primary School, Ekorinim, Calabar, Cross River state. The school has over 500 students, 6 classrooms and is in need of structural renovation and assistance. Addressing guests at the ceremony, held at the school’s premises, Chairman of Oando PLC, Major General Mohammed Magoro said that the primary sub sector was the most troubled of the three tiers in the education sector. According to the recent census report in 2006, there are approximately 140 million Nigerians, 45% of whom are children between the ages of 0 – 15years. 42.1 million are eligible for Primary education, however only 22.3million are in primary schools as at year end 2005. It can be estimated that 47% (19.8 million) of Nigerian children do not have access to primary school education. The company has therefore decided to improve the quality of education in Nigeria through its Corporate Social Responsibility initiative, which means that 90% of the CSR budget will be geared towards empowering youths through education. Mr. Wale Tinubu in his own address mentioned the areas in which the company will support education. Areas such as Infrastructural renovation, teacher training, provision of teaching aids and training materials, sponsorship of health education and provision of literary materials for the library. The Head Mistress of the school, Mrs. Bassey Umo expressed her delight and gratitude at the adoption of the school. She mentioned that since the school was established in 1976, they have been operating in a single block of six classrooms. Ever since that time, the school has been in dire need of additional classroom blocks, seats, toilets, pipe-borne water and electricity. The school has about 522 pupils with a class population ranging from 70 -100. This has put a lot of stress on the infrastructural amenities in the school. She thanked Oando PLC for adopting the school as this signifies a brighter future ahead. ScholarshipsIn promoting education for youths in Nigeria, with a focus on Primary and Secondary schooling for less privilege children, it is imperative for us to be involved in scholarships. We have been providing scholarships for children as part of our Secondary School Children’s Scholarship Project, which was initiated in 2005. The project provides secondary school educational scholarships to 10 children in the Bundu and Onne communities collectively. The scholarship which is awarded annually is given to indigent students of the communities who are identified and recommended by the communities based on their financial and other special needs. The aim of the scholarship award programme is to shoulder the financial burden of the children’s education for an initial five-year period. In 2007, we intend to provide scholarships to more children in the residing host communities in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. The scholarships would be distributed during the end of the calendar year through the Community Development Committee (CDC).
