We are an evolving Company, and as our business needs change so do we develop and/or improve the people management systems we need to effectively harness the positive energies of our workforce. Below are highlights of some of our Human Capital Development programs, some of which are still being developed: Human Capital Development Initiatives at OandoWe are focused on ensuring the structured development of our employees right from the Graduate entry/Graduate Trainee level to the most senior positions in the organisation. An 18-month formal Graduate Trainee Programme has been developed and will commence shortly. In this program, our young graduates will be exposed to basic skills development courses and learning experiences through which their general business knowledge would be strengthened, and through which they would start the process of building the core Commercial, Technical/ Functional and Leadership skills required as they settle into their longer-term jobs in the Company. Our formalised Career Management system enables us develop career tracks for individual employees. As our young graduates successfully complete the Graduate Trainee Program, we begin to have a clear sense of their areas of strength and where they would likely succeed the most in their careers. We are thus able to develop career plans for each individual, showing the job progressions/moves that would enable well rounded competency development and exposure to required job experiences. We have a comprehensive Performance Management System in place through which employees have a clear sense of their job objectives and specific targets each performance period. In addition, the system focuses on identifying each individual’s areas of development based on assessed performance which happens both informally and formally at various times throughout the year. The performance data obtained through this process helps us identify short and longer term developmental needs and/or job changes where necessary such that at each point in time we have the right person in the right job performing optimally. Our Senior level staff, Management and Top Executives also have focused career development plans, which emphasises their ability to lead and develop others. Our Succession Planning and Leadership Development Programs, which would include the use of internationally recognised assessment tools, formal and experiential learning would help us identify complementary skills sets of various individuals to be put to use as we create various teams focused on addressing business issues, strategic and operational in nature. The system would also help us to identify our leaders of tomorrow, and to commence the process of grooming them early. Our general training management system and curriculum is tailored to meet the current and future competency development requirements of our various businesses. We regularly provide local, international and on-the job training events and experiences through which our employees are able to maximise their performance potential. Generalist business, specialist technical, management and leadership skills development are emphasised in the training courses, some of which are in-house/facilitated by our more experienced staff. Finally, at Oando we believe continuous and effective Communication enables all our employees attain a shared understanding of, and buy-in to the Company’s Vision and strategic direction. To this end, several times a year, we hold Corporate and Departmental Retreats and work-sessions lasting a couple of hours to a few days each, and targeted at various employee groups. These sessions aid awareness creation, knowledge building, issues identification, solutions planning and development and implementation efforts for our various plans and initiatives. All these programs combined help us at Oando to develop our employees into strong and capable business executives today, and tomorrow. |
